All relationships carry an underlying, sometimes invisible dynamic of power.

On the extremes of power, we swing from being resignedly obedient to outrageously rebellious.
When we have power, we may be shy of owning it, thinking that, by denying power we are allowing all to be equal.
Or, we may unintentionally abuse it, and be experienced as oppressive or dismissive. We oscillate from being too lenient (creating confusion and lack of leadership) to taking one-sided decisions, and becoming authoritarian. 
Many times we are left feeling alienated, disgusted, discouraged or outraged, and overall uncomfortable to talk to anyone about our anguish.

With all these issues related to power, why do we hesitate to address them? 

Because it’s tricky, no matter what end of the stick we are in. If we have less power, naming an abuse is risky. We may experience censorship, shaming, punishment or alienation. If we are in a position of power, “giving in” can lead to lack of direction and endless negotiations, causing loss of reputation and power itself. 

So we sweep it all under the rug, and navigate our relationships as if we are walking with a pebble inside our shoe. 
The more we avoid the issues, the more we perpetuate them.
Overtime, we are left with a messy, unhealthy relational space, filled with skepticism, gossip, resentment and mistrust.

Cecilia Kremer - Empathy Coach

Cecilia Kremer is an Empathy & Leadership coach, speaker and facilitator. She is passionate about helping people to learn and apply the Power of Empathy in the workplace and their lives.
